Rowing Race of the “Contradas”
EVENTS – June 15, 2014 Cavallino Treporti (VE) – The Palio Remiero delle Contrade (Districts Rowing Race) consists of the use of the 6-oar caorlina (a fast, double-ended open boat), taking place in “pursuit”, as two boats launch at a time, in the competition area opposite Cavallino’s square. Each crew is matched to a district (for a total of twelve city districts). The challenge, moreover, to re-create as a sports event a race that once took place every morning on the lagoon, with the market gardeners from Sant’Erasmo, Vignole, and Cavallino pulling like the devil on their oars to be the first to arrive with their vegetables and their fruit at the Rialto market. The historical and cultural part of this event is represented by a spectacular water parade. Indeed, some boats in the procession are part of the Venice Historical Regatta and with a goodly representation of the most beautiful boats from the rowing club Società Remiere di Venezia e della Terraferma Veneziana.
